No panacea attractant for wild pigs (Sus scrofa), but season and location matter

چکیده
Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are a prolific invasive species throughout many regions of the world that cause extensive economic and environmental damage. Trapping is common strategy for reducing their populations with baits (i.e., food) attractants (e.g., scents) used to lure wild into traps. However, there little information on which scent may attract more readily rapidly across seasons. We examined 60 could be increase trapping success three seasons (winter, spring, fall) in two geographic regions, including warm semi-arid rangeland (South Texas, USA) moist mixture upland bottomland forests Carolina, USA). found evidence most scents attracted pigs. Only strawberry extract creosote bush oil increased probabilities visitation, only Texas during fall season. No other performed better than control no scent) both study locations. More visited sites season regardless attractant used. The location site mattered was used, post hoc analysis revealed distances roads water flowlines permanent or ephemeral drainages, streams, rivers) visitation some conclude panacea effective controls attracting Placement seasonality were important pigs, suggesting traps bait specific management activities. Future research should include monitoring movements relative evaluation food-rewards) drawing sites.

Context. Wild pigs are an invasive species linked to numerous negative impacts on natural and anthropogenic ecosystems in many regions of the world. Robust estimates of juvenile wild pig survival are needed to improve population dynamics models to facilitate management of this economically and ecologically important invasive species. Despite this critical knowledgegap, todate no successful know...
متن کاملPrevalence of Trichinella spp. antibodies in wild boars (Sus scrofa) and domestic pigs in Korea
Trichinellosis is a parasitic zoonosis that is of importance to public health; human trichinellosis usually occurs when improperly cooked pork or wild animal meat is consumed. The purpose of this study was to determine the nationwide seroprevalence of Trichinella infection in wild boar and domestic pig populations in Korea. Using ELISA, we detected no seropositivity among the serum samples of 2...

Cryptosporidium suis n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in pigs (Sus scrofa).
Molecular and biological characteristics of a new species of Cryptosporidium from the feces of pigs (Sus scrofa) is described. Oocysts are structurally indistinguishable from those of Cryptosporidium parvum; they are passed fully sporulated, lack sporocysts, and measure 4.9-4.4 microm (mean = 4.6 microm) x 4.0-4.3 microm (mean = 4.2 microm); length to width ratio 1.1 (n = 50). Cryptosporidium s...
